Theater as a means for citizenship, vocational training and personal development

Theater is not only a place to watch, but also to meet, reflect and discover new perspectives. This is precisely why it is a powerful tool for citizenship, professional formation and personal development.

Why theater?

Theater is one of the few places where an entire class experiences the same thing at the same time, but everyone experiences something different. Students each recognize their own story, dilemma or future professional situation. This makes theater a valuable opportunity to discuss social issues and engage with each other. Theater teaches students not only to understand themselves better, but also the other. Not to agree with each other, but to allow different perspectives to coexist. Especially in a time of polarization, theater teaches to check things differently, without losing your own opinion.

What does it deliver?

A theater visit can contribute to:

  • Citizenship
  • Career orientation and guidance (LOB)
  • Personal development
  • Professional attitude

In addition, students work on skills such as empathy, reflection, critical thinking and cooperation. Themes such as mental health, identity, self-confidence, performance pressure, status anxiety, social cohesion, youth welfare and professional orientation also recur regularly in our offerings.

More than a performance

We like to think along with you about a program that suits your education and learning goals. In addition to a performance, workshops, follow-up discussions, meetings with makers or experts by experience, practical assignments and customized projects are possible.

Thus theater becomes not just an experience, but a hands-on learning experience.

Inspiration from practice

What we have done

Poverty explained to people with money - Tim 's Jongers

Students from SUMMA Social Work attended the theatercollege Poverty explained to people with money. Together with experts by experience, professionals and the municipality of Eindhoven, they discussed subsistence security and social participation. The results of this session were used by the municipality as input to shape future local policy together with the community. Thus, this project shows that theater not only has an impact on students, but can also contribute to social issues in the city.

You could do this

Time Machine - HNTjong

A performance about youth violence, peer pressure and the consequences of choices. A powerful trigger for conversations about social safety, responsibility and the role of future professionals.

RENT - Theaterplan Zuid-Nederland

In this musical, players aged 16 to 24 from the Eindhoven region take the play. Themes such as identity, friendship, loneliness, housing shortage and future prospects connect directly to the world of many MBO students and offer plenty of starting points for citizenship, LOB and personal development.

These examples do not stand alone. From Parktheater Verbindt we develop projects together with education, social organizations and the municipality in which art contributes to citizenship, talent development and social impact.

Check what fits together

Whether it concerns a performance, workshop or a larger educational or social project: we are happy to help you think about a program that fits your learning goals and social task. If desired, we can develop a context program around a performance together with partners from the city. From project development and possible financing to implementation and evaluation: together we work on a program with impact for students, education and the city.

Practical

A theater visit or educational project is often easier to organize than you might think. Performances can be used within citizenship, LOB, personal development or vocational education. There are also opportunities through the MBO Culture Card, pupil places and, for selected performances, Pay What You Want.
