Tell us: who are you and why do you enjoy going to work? My name is Bas van de Ven (30) and besides being a ticket sales assistant at the Parktheater, I am a theater maker. I direct, write, play, sing and make songs. With my youth theatre group Dolfijn Met Benen I follow the talent development program THINX. With that I make youth theater for adults. I also direct at several amateur societies and have my own music theater group called HEERSBEEST.
What I like most about my work is the variety and versatility. I try to be open to all different forms of theater and love to develop myself to the full. Sometimes I make very spherical, visual and experimental music theater and other times I make very lighthearted, cabaretesque youth theater pieces.
I find it most inspiring to work with talented creators from different disciplines.
What are your biggest motivations? It is always my aim to show people in all their imperfection and with all their conflicting thoughts and feelings. We will never find out exactly what is going on inside another person's head. You will never know exactly what another person is thinking or what moves another person. Only by using imagination can you give others a glimpse into someone's inner world. I feel that by doing this you can bring people a little closer together and give a deeper insight into themselves.
This movement generates energy and we like to pass it on to others. With this #doorSTROOM we can make the world a little more beautiful every day! What inspiration do you find important to share with others? I don't think it's really relevant what inspires me. It is mainly about getting a little closer to the motivations of the creators in the conversations. It is my aim to be able to shed a little light on the makers from different sides.
How important do you think it is for people to become part of this #throughSTROOM? If you are interested in the creators, stories and motivations behind performances, then STROOM is definitely of interest to you!
The MeetUp gives the opportunity for great encounters and real conversations. Which person would you like to meet one day? I would like to meet the singer Roosbeef. I think she is one of the most inspiring musicians in the Netherlands. She is very opinionated and dares to express herself in all her vulnerability. I find that very admirable and it makes her concerts very disarming.
What is your secret for a good, in-depth conversation? I don't have one, but I love ideas very much and I'm always curious about where ideas come from, how they originate, how you recognize a good idea and how you do it justice. If you're open and curious, that can make for a great conversation I think.
