A jovial truck driver, an undisguised dominatrix, a shy accountant, an activist theater maker. This is how people check them in the outside world. In here, they are all people who didn't know it anymore.

They would walk for hours, some would lie in bed - arms entwined - for days, some would make diamond paintings of dolphins, some would only communicate by knocking on their bathroom wall, some would secretly start an app group, one of them got his first kiss.

IK BEN KAMER 15 moves between audio documentary and theater. The performance is about life in a psychiatric clinic. About and with people who meet at their most vulnerable and how rare wonderful that can be. About people for whom continuing to exist every day is a heroic act. About people who didn't know that falling so diep existed.

In the Netherlands, more than 1.5 million people receive mental health care—the highest number ever recorded. Yet there are still many stigmas attached to people who are “crazy,” those with anxiety, and those suffering from depression. I AM ROOM 15 opens windows into our thinking about these people and the system from which they one day fell. In this performance, we check the colorful mini-society within a psychiatric clinic—a society of completely crazy, yet very ordinary people.

The performance I AM ROOM 15 also features a supporting program.

Following the performance, there will be a panel discussion with people with lived experience and experts from the field. For each performance, we’ll focus on a different theme within mental health care during the discussion. The discussion lasts 20 minutes and takes place in the auditorium immediately following the performance.
An exhibition to check and hear is on display in the foyer.
For this exhibition, we collaborated with photographer Yoeri Hostie and podcast creator Xandry van den Besselaar. Yoeri created four portraits of various people with lived experience in psychiatry. Four different perspectives: people in clinics, their loved ones, and those working in healthcare themselves. These individuals can also be heard via audio in the performance. Xandry created a mini-podcast for each of these people—an audio portrait that can be listened to alongside the physical portrait.
