On saving democracy and the search for the recipe for participatory citizenship
Mon 28 Sep '26
19:30 - 21:30

In BURGER we meet Becky, a participation officer of a small municipality who is tasked with re-engaging the angry citizens of the Bloemenbuurt neighborhood in local democracy.

Armed with butter cake and good intentions, she dives into the complex world of citizen participation. From a disastrous participation evening to a successful citizens' council: true democracy does not happen overnight. When her project is halted despite success, her idealism clashes hard with the realities of politics and her personal life.

BURGER is a theatrical plea to save democracy and the search for the recipe for participatory citizenship. Because how do you bake a good citizen?

With live music, humor and juicy anecdotes, Becky's narration explores the territory around democracy and citizenship, social and personal responsibility, expectation and reality. Becky's advocacy is followed by a substantive conversation with the audience, on these topics and what it means to be a good citizen in today's democracy.
