What sets this “ Alice in Wonderland ” apart?
Just like the original Alice story, Sofie Tseng’s script is full of philosophical leaps of thought and absurdist wordplay. Alice is overwhelmed by bizarre events and doesn’t understand the language of Wonderland—just as children daily miss words and meanings in the world around them. But instead of backing down, Alice starts thinking for herself.
What this production of Alice aims to teach children: keep thinking for yourself, especially in a world that bombards you with conflicting arguments and opinions. How do you navigate an adult world where nothing is certain?
The fusion of text and dance
Wonderland is a world that defies logic: Alice steps into a world where rules don’t make sense and words lose their meaning. Dance can make that borderland between logic and absurdity visible: physical experiences such as falling, growing, and shrinking, and transformations. The slow caterpillar, the angry Queen of Hearts, the fast rabbit: each character has its own physical language, its own rhythm—so that children understand them even before a word is spoken.
The Total Experience
Text, dance, set design, music—ranging from fairy-tale-like to heavy breakbeats—and costumes constantly reinforce one another. While the text provides intellectual grounding, the dance, visuals, and sound carry the experience: the chaos, the wonder, the uncertainty. Together, they create a holistic experience that amazes children—and their parents—and gives them food for thought.
