In Anton de Kom, my father, Doris takes the audience into a story, but it quickly grows into a diep personal quest. As an adopted child from Suriname, she feels estranged from her Dutch parents. She experiences her family as a puzzle that never quite fits and decides to search for her roots.
That search leads her to the life story of Anton de Kom, the legendary Surinamese resistance hero who resisted colonial oppression. His struggle, ideals and courage touch her diep. The more Doris delves into his life, the stronger she sees the parallels with her own struggles. Slowly, her research turns into an intimate encounter. Anton de Kom feels like the father she never knew, a guide in her search for identity and recognition. What does family mean and to what extent does descent define who you are?
Anton de Kom, my father is a moving and inspiring performance about struggle, connection and the fundamental question, "Who are you at home with?"
