In short: what happens when kleinkunst meets the deep south of America?
Maybe the worlds of folk, blues and kleinkunst are closer together than you think. Loss, longing and the small tragedy of life. Stories about ordinary people and their fate. We more often a piano, they prefer a guitar. But always armed with sharp sentences and a good dose of irony.
In Wachtend op de dood Maarten Heijmans and Xander Vrienten find out. Together with a strong band they play new songs and cabaret classics, somewhere between the Jordaan and the Mississippi.
What to do in the waiting room of death? Life.
About Maarten & Xander
Maarten Heijmans is an actor and singer who in recent years has become an exceptional interpreter of the cabaret song. He was part of ITA's acting ensemble for a long time and made an impression with his role as Ramses Shaffy on TV. With his musicality and feeling for lyrics and theater, he gives new life to the repertoire of our greatest songwriters.
Xander Vrienten developed as a bassist, songwriter and producer who feels just as at home in rock 'n' roll as he does in pop music. As long as there's a bit of soul in it.
During their collaboration in the hit musical Hadestown , Heijmans and Vrienten discovered a shared love for the music of the American South. There, where blues, folk and jazz come together, they found unexpected kinship with Dutch cabaret song. From that discovery came the idea for this program.
