The story is af on a family estate in southern America. Three adult children gather with their families in their deceased father's house. The contents must be divided, the house sold. As subcutaneous tensions brew and old feuds flare up, the children make a disturbing discovery that will change their lives forever.

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' language is blistering and muscular. The personages are gritty, violent and vulnerable all at once. The family problems are harsh and witty, but The Inheritance is more than just a family chronicle. The Lafayette family symbolizes a Western world struggling with the question of the extent to which children bear responsibility for the actions of their parents.

A world in which the youngest generation must find a way to live with what has past event left to it. For those who ignore the past are inevitably overtaken by it.
