Ask AI about the highlight of theater history and the answer is undoubtedly Hamlet. Shakespeare's famous play is a virtuoso revenge drama full of timeless dilemmas about love, madness, creativity and death.
In R2D2_or_not_2B2, a dozen robots take the play: a mix of intelligent vacuum cleaners, bionic quadrupeds and androids in existential crisis. In a witty and confrontational interpretation, they try to reconstruct the world-famous play as shards of a broken vase. While losing themselves in their roles, they hyper-self-consciously reflect on the theatrical forms they deploy and, through the iconic personages , explore what humanity actually means.
Just as Hamlet once stood on the threshold between Middle Ages and Renaissance, we are now in a transition to a digital age. In a monumental setting, R2D2_or_not_2B2 presents a free, intelligent adaptation of the play that is as timeless as it is current.

About De Warme Winkel
De Warme Winkel is widely acclaimed as one of the most exciting theater companies in the Netherlands. They create pieces for the small and large auditoriums, on location and abroad, and also regularly go over the top with stimulating actions and projects. For example, during the first lockdown they created the coronaproof theater Peepshow Palace, together with BOG. they founded theater incubator De Sloot, where countless theater makers work and reside, they shared the play with reality TV stars from Temptation Island and Ex on the Beach in A Sincere Ode to Irony, they changed their name to toneelgroep Amsterdam (and back again) and made headlines with their performance Het Zomeroffer in the Amsterdam forest, in which every night a car belonging to someone in the audience was sacrificed.
