Katrien van Beurden raced around the world for 25 years making theater with a suitcase full of commedia masks. Until she suddenly had to lie still. Having just become a mother, with cancer in her breast, she listens to the monotonous beeping of the MRI and af, "How do you actually do that, lying still?"
There unfolds a kaleidoscopic journey past all the race survivors, the harlekinos, she met, back to Kaatje. The eight-year-old girl who, singing loudly, stuffs her dead brother's coffin with toys. In a home drowning in grief and anger, she discovers early on that play and imagination are her staunchest allies.
Harlekino is a wild, comical and poetic solo. A performance bubbling with energy and raw emotion. Katrien balances between reality and imagination. She creates, with her masks and specially composed music by Remy van Kesteren, a cinematic storm of stories.
She takes on the role of Harlekino, the iconic trickster, whose spirit has past event her long-standing fascination and driving force. He teaches us that hope is not something to believe, but something to do.
