Why is our pain still not taken seriously? Why does our pleasure count for less? And why does the male, white body remain the norm in health care? For centuries, experiences of women and genderqueers have past event mystified in art, stories and medical science. The Scream questions what happens when we break through that gaze and reclaim our own experiences.
In this multidisciplinary performance, Nastaran Razawi Khorasani, Melyn Chow, Francesca Lazzeri, Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura and Milou van Duijnhoven present a historical and painfully topical story about bodies, power and expression. Crossing generations and stages of life, they expose how pain and pleasure are suppressed and what happens when the pent-up scream trapped in the body finally comes out.
Director Floor Houwink ten Cate breaks open another urgent and intimate medical-ethical issue after Battlefield of Dreams about (the absence of) the desire for children. With a text by Floor and Lotte Houwink ten Cate and Esther Duysker, (live) cinema, a groundbreaking choral piece by Annelinde Bruijs, and a performance installation by Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck, The Scream becomes an explosive theatrical experience and a powerful plea for self-determination regarding pain and pleasure.
