Ooghoogte holds up a mirror to us. Mercilessly, you might say. Since May 2024 Alex has past event in a wheelchair thanks to the muscle disorder HSP. Based on his experiences as a first-time wheelchair user, he examines how inclusive we really are.
Dealing with awkwardness
Every threshold becomes a bump. And there appear to be many of them. How do you get into an airplane? How do you enter a monumental building with stately steps or a conference on, yes, accessibility? With a great sense of humor and the necessary self-mockery, Alex addresses our well-meaning awkwardness, unsolicited advice and imposed helpfulness.
Experience the difference
With Ooghoogte , Alex makes inclusiveness tangible. He introduces us to the practical obstacles and social and human challenges he faces as a wheelchair user. The central question is: is he allowed and able to participate in society?
- Afterwards there is a discussion in the auditorium
- In cooperation with the Eindhoven Library, this performance is part of The Week of Mental Health.
About Alex Sijm
Alex Sijm is an energetic entrepreneur who lives with the muscle disorder hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP). Constantly he has to adapt his life. But that doesn't stop him from pursuing his dreams both professionally and privately.
As a child, Alex had only one dream: to become a circus director. Not exactly a lucrative sector. Yet he built a thriving events with 4 productions, 40 employees and 150,000 happy faces a year. For 20 years he traveled the Netherlands and Belgium with his circuses. He was awarded the Culture Award of North Holland and De Opsteker of the City of Utrecht.
From circus director...
He made his dream come true in a sector in which it is not easy to write black figures. After 20 years he had to trade the circus arena - although he didn't know it at the time - for a wheelchair.
...to storyteller
It is precisely this change that he now uses as a source of strength and inspiration. Alex shows that setbacks do not have to be the end, but bring a next chapter full of opportunities, humor and humanity. During conferences and in the theater Alex knows how to touch people with a unique story that offers a new perspective on what is really important.
