Exhibition | City Tapestry
A colorful map of Eindhoven, created by many hands
City Tapestry is a unique tapestry of Eindhoven, made from discarded T-shirts. Textile designers Bernadette Wiltink and Joëlle Baten collected locally donated shirts and cut them into strips of fabric, which they then used with a tufting gun to create a colorful map of the city.
The tapestry was created during Dutch Design Week in collaboration with residents of Eindhoven. Everyone was invited to participate, resulting not only in a map but also in a colorful portrait of the people who make up Eindhoven.
The various colors and patterns each tell their own story. An old T-shirt—once worn—takes on a new form and meaning. The work questions the value of clothing in an era of fast fashion. This piece demonstrates what is possible when collective creation and reuse come together.
