The building
Architecture
1964
Parktheater Eindhoven was built in 1964, then as Stadssschouwburg Eindhoven. At that time, the building was very modern and quite unique in Europe. It had grandeur. Its fancy, luxurious appearance made it a vibrant hot spot in 1960s Eindhoven.
In the mid-1990s, the building was in need of renovation. Technically, the theater was outdated. Over time, all sorts of modifications had past event made, giving the whole a cluttered impression.
Globetheater
The existing small Globetheater no longer met the needs of the time, as did the offices scattered around the building. In September 1995, the city council agreed to plans for renovation and new construction.
It was not until 2007 that a new theater could be commissioned.
Renovation
Between 2005 and 2007, the theater was completely renovated and expanded with the new, multifunctional Philipszaal. On January 15, 2007, the new Parktheater opened its doors, followed by the opening of the Park and Plush restaurant in October 2007.
For the renovation and construction of the Philipszaal Parktheater Eindhoven, the firm 'Architecten en I en' was engaged. The design for the multifunctional Philipszaal by architect Arie van Rangelrooy was inspired by the Teatro Central from Seville. This theater was built on the occasion of the 1989 World Expo.
