In De Stille Vrouw actress and theater maker Dilan Yurdakul gives a voice to her grandmothers - the first generation of migrant women. Women who left their homeland behind, silently built a new existence and rarely spoke about their desires, sadness or strength. They bore much, often kept silent and stayed in the background. What do the stories of our grandmothers say about our lives today?

Poetically, Dilan interweaves the voices of these unheard women with her own quest: what kind of woman is she? How free is she as a woman today? What choices does she make - and what does she still carry with her from the past? A personal and candid search for what was lost and what was preserved.

Born in the Netherlands, Dilan af: What do I still carry from them in me? What has past event passed on consciously or tacitly? The story of de stille vrouw becomes palpable in a personal and penetrating performance about womanhood, not being seen and not being heard, origins and the legacy of unprocessed suffering.

After Through the Shadows and Alter, Dilan delves deeper than ever into her personal history. She shows that what is not spoken does not disappear - it is passed on. With De Stille Vrouw, Dilan pays tribute to the women who remained silent, but whose silence resonates to this day.

About the makers

Dilan Yurdakul (1991) is an actress, writer and theater producer. In 2024 her debut novel Maskerziel was published and she played the lead role in the film The hunt for Meral Ö. As of 2025, she is one of the regular creators at Via Rudolphi Productions.

As preliminary research for the performance, Dilan created a four-part podcast series with Via Rudolphi Productions. This can be listened to from January 2026 in your favorite podcast app!

In the podcast series, Dilan explores the lives of her grandmothers and her own life as a woman: what has changed, what does she take from her grandmothers, and what does she leave behind? Key themes include autonomy, motherhood and depression. The podcast, a mix of journalistic research, personal stories and artistic content, was created in collaboration with the UvA where Dilan was an honorary fellow for the past year. The series consists of interviews with her grandmothers and family members and conversations with experts such as Rinus Penninx (professor of ethnic studies and migration), Gemma Blok (professor of history of mental health and culture) and Marieke Voorhoeve (intergenerational worker). In the final episode, Dilan talks with Gunay Uslu (former State Secretary for Culture and Media) about her personal life path and how her mother shaped her. What did she take away from the women who came before her?
