The power of love
Phaedra, queen of Athens, lives trapped in an unhappy marriage with her husband Theseus. Everything changes when she meets her soon-to-be daughter-in-law Persea. This young woman shakes up everything and everyone around her, recklessly kicking against existing power structures. Phaedra becomes enchanted by Persea's fierce strength. A secret, passionate relationship ensues, with disastrous consequences.
Director Ola Mafaalani made his name with raw, expressive and poetic performances such as Othello, Heaven above Berlin and Fellini. Now, for the first time since the theatrical hit Borgen (2016), she is back in the big screen. Composer Krists Auznieks wrote new music, which will be performed live by four musicians (viola, cello, harp and violin) of the New European Ensemble.
The media about Phaedra in vlammen
'Malou Gorter shows tremendous strength in the lead role of Phaedra. Her intimate interplay with Persea, played by Yela de Koning, is intense. They show the strength of women, but also the vulnerable position women are pushed into.' Maimoena Hulshof (NRC ★★★★)
'Although Phaedra first rejects her advances, after this we check the two women promptly engage in a tantalizing love scene that leaves the audience dead silent.' Ela Çolak (de Volkskrant ★★★★)
- With free interactive supporting act at 7:30 pm. Together we look at the world of the manosphere and female spirituality. How do these systems hold the personages back or give them freedom? And what do they tell us over de liefde?
Accessible for the blind and visually impaired
This performance is also available with audio description and meet & feel introduction. A blind interpreter from The National Theatre will be present with live audio description. Only blind and visually impaired people can hear this via wireless headphones. Beforehand, the blind interpreter will also give a special meet & feel introduction. This includes a description of the scenery, costumes, important scene changes, etc. During the meet&feel, the actors come by to introduce themselves in their roles, so that visitors know which voice belongs to which role. In some cases, we also create a miniature version of the set. Guide dogs for the blind are welcome. In the ordering process, choose tickets that include audio description.
Director Ola Mafaalani: "For me, Phaedra in vlammen is about the unstoppable power of love, which like weeds keeps blossoming among the rubble. Nino Haratischwili shows how we all - women and men - live in a world based on outdated structures. The old has not yet decayed, so the new cannot be born. Phaedra and Persea make an attempt to force that renewal, but conservative forces don't give them a chance. Their attempt is necessary, especially now. If we do not fight for loving intercourse there will be none!"
Writer Nino Haratischwili
Nino Haratischwili is a Georgian-German writer. In addition to her novels - the best known are The Eighth Life (for Brilka) (2017), The Cat and the General (2019), The Scarce Light (2022) - she writes a lot of theater, essays and opinion pieces. Initially, she wrote Phaedra in vlammen in line with the classic myth, in which Phaedra falls in love with her stepson. But when she was writing in Tbilisi in 2021, the gay pride parade there was under fire. She saw the rise of homophobia in her country, influenced in part by church and right-wing populist politicians. She threw out what she had already written and turned Phaedra in vlammen a queer version.
