Under the aegis of Emoves, Ali Zanad (Baghdad, 1994) created a full-length triptych consisting of a group piece, Sat'Eh, a solo performed by himself in Wijk 1803, and a documentary about his making that connects these two pieces, Detour Omweg Naar Huis.

How does his dance life, which began in the Netherlands, relate to the dance culture of his native soil? That's what Ali Zanad af himself. In the triptych Omweg naar Huis Ali follows the trail to his source. At the same time, with this project, Ali makes the step from dancer to maker. A dance film, a solo and a piece for three dancers, take the viewer on a journey.

The documentary and dance film Omweg naar Huis follows Ali on his research trip to Morocco in 2024. Searching for roots of Arab dance culture, he recognizes himself in young street dancers and draws inspiration from the ways in which tradition and hip-hop meet in Morocco. Filmmaker Constantin Trommelitz followed Ali on this journey and filmed part of the making of SAT'EH.

WIJK1803
WIJK 1803 is an ode to the square in Baghdad where Ali grew up. His solo refers to the square where he played soccer and met wonderful, wandering figures. Every gesture is an echo from the past. An environment that is unsafe and inhospitable to the average Westerner becomes the scene of adventure, imagination and security in this solo. Outlined in a raw and physical dance language.

SAT'EH
SAT'EH is the Arabic word for roof. In Arab cultures, people often gather on the flat roof of their homes, from where they look out over the world. This choreography by Ali is a journey of discovery about who he is and what lives inside him. A longing for that piece of yourself that gives you peace in all the chaos. The finale of the triptych is an echo of Ali's inner world, represented by three dancers.
