Meer dan Bauxiet is an important and penetrating theatrical work that highlights untold war stories from Suriname. Emma Lesuis inherited a wealth of archival material from Suriname with film footage from the 1940s and 1950s. This prompted her to investigate. What happened in Suriname during World War II?

It is always said that there was no war in the former colony, but what happened there at the time? Emma visited places where the exciting stories came to life and spoke with people who still had memories of those - for many - good old days. The result of her research was worked out in an intimate and cinematic theater performance at the intersection of musical theater, documentary and storytelling.

Meer dan Bauxiet was one of the hits of Oerol 2024. The 17 performances sold out within 24 hours and were received with great enthusiasm by the audience.

Meer dan Bauxiet in the media
"Lesuis is a toriteller pur sang who plays her audience with humor and a sharp wit." (Parool)
"Important and penetrating theatrical work about Suriname in World War II" (Theaterkrant)

  • With aftertalk:
Stay tuned afterwards After the performance, Martijn Docters (Hornemann house) and Saida Vianen (chairwoman Committee June 30-July 1) will discuss the themes of Meer dan Bauxiet. Using archival material by Brother Willem Alvares, they explore how our history is often told from a Eurocentric perspective and what happens when we broaden that picture. A valuable opportunity to reflect, deepen and continue the conversation together.
  • Contrary to previous information, there is no introduction prior to this performance.
