Foxtrot is one of the biggest successes of Annie M.G. Schmidt and Harry Bannink: founders of the originally Dutch 'mjoeziekul'. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Schmidt's death. As an ode, a brand-new version of this legendary musical can be seen in Dutch theaters.

Foxtrot is af in the turbulent 1930s. A time of onbekommerd fun but also of worries about threats of war and an economic crisis. The story begins when the naive Josien leaves the province and ends up in an artists' boarding house in Amsterdam. There she meets Jules and Lisette: revue stars in a nightclub on the bustling Rembrandtplein. The landlady Mathilde has Jules and Lisette pose as German teachers and opera singers. Josien is taught by Jules and soon falls head over heels in love with him, only he cannot reciprocate that love. When Paul - Jules' secret love - then shares bed with Josien, it results in a pregnancy and the making of impossible choices.

This musical classic contains songs that are etched in our collective memory: Dancing on a Volcano, Sorry I Exist and, of course, the grand showbiz opening number The Thirties. The now 80-year-old Gerrie van der Klei can once again be seen in the musical after 49 years. Alternating with Marjolijn Touw, she plays landlady Mathilde. Her former role is now played by Renée de Gruijl. William Spaaij plays the demanding male lead, taking over from Willem Nijholt and Paul de Leeuw. The young talent Teuntje Post follows in the footsteps of Carice van Houten with the role of Josien.

NEW ADAPTATION
The experienced creative team consists of director Joep Onderdelinden(De Hospita, Blind Date), scriptwriter Dick van den Heuvel(Was getekend, Annie M.G. Schmidt, Malle Babbe) and creative director Maurice Wijnen(Petticoat, Ciske). In close consultation with the Schmidt and Bannink heirs, they are creating a new adaptation based on the original 1977 play.

Get carried away by this typically Dutch story full of humor and tragedy, glitter & glamour and the sharp pen of Annie M.G Schmidt.
