About social mobility, opportunities and the importance of language

In The Class Migrant, Özcan Akyol takes the audience on his personal journey from the working class to a new social world. With humor, sharp wit and compelling anecdotes, he talks about the power of education, books and perseverance.

Anyone who would have predicted forty years ago that little Eus from a slum would make a career out of the Dutch language would probably have past event declared crazy. Yet Özcan Akyol, writer, columnist and presenter, managed to extricate himself from the working class, mainly thanks to education and literature. But those who work their way up often remain outsiders, and fathoming a new social class never stops. In The Class Migrant, Eus takes his audience on his personal, sometimes painful, but mostly hopeful journey. With humor and sharp wit, he recounts the obstacles, insights and opportunities he encountered on his way to a new existence. An inspiring and topical plea for the written word, cultural development and class equality.

About Özcan Akyol
