It is an adventurous and free existence in the middle of nature. The Fantastic family lives in the woods, makes music, stokes fires and reads and debates about the world. Without school, screens and city bustle. But when their mother dies, the family must move to the big city for the first time. There they discover a world full of rules, customs and things they have never seen before. Can they find a way in the "real" world? Captain Fantastic is a quirky family show suitable for anyone aged eight and up.

Raising and growing up outside the lines
Director Nina Spijkers, known for such great classics as Antigone and The Eighth Life, is making her first performance for the entire family with Captain Fantastic : "Now that I've become a mother myself, I'm endlessly concerned with how to raise a child. The film Captain Fantastic questioned my motherhood so critically. For example, how should we deal with the influence of all the screens in our daily lives? But also: how do you talk to children about complicated topics?"

Based on the award-winning film Captain Fantastic
In this theatrical version of the famous film, we follow father Ben and his children Bo (17), Rellian (14), Vesper (11) and Zasj (7). They live diep in the forest, where they learn how to survive in nature as well as how to keep thinking critically: which plants to eat, how to catch a rabbit and what are the principles of constitution and quantum theory. When they hear that their mother has died, they return to the city for her funeral. There they are confronted with a world full of strange customs and strange things: from smartphones to Coke and hot dogs. Their grandmother demands that the children come live with her. But the family fights to stay together.

The influence of screens
"Now that I have become a mother myself I am endlessly concerned with how to raise a child and this film questioned my motherhood so critically. For example, how should we deal with the influence of all the screens in our daily lives. The children in the film grow up completely screen-free, making music in the evening or reading by a campfire. What can we learn from that in these times when we and our children watch screens all day?" - Director Nina Spijkers

Watch
