My Wayang and I is a dance performance about how the past can continue to haunt us. About the tension that settles in the body, about exclusion and the pain of not being accepted. But also about the power of imagination and the desire to break free from what once was.

Last year Afra Ernst flew back to Indonesia after eighteen years. Born in Jakarta and in the Netherlands since the age of six, she kept wondering why she and her mother left at the time. Her gut feeling turned out to be right: it was pure necessity, they had no choice. A shadow past that Afra, no matter how hard she tries, cannot let go of.

Afra weaves dance, poetry and Indonesian imagery into a carefully layered performance. In her choreography, Mauri Kierindoongo, Christiaan Hendriksen and Moze Naél (poetry) take the audience into a probing internal struggle about learning to accept one's shadow past.

My Wayang and I makes tangible that we ourselves are always stronger than our shadows. And leaves one question in the visitor's mind: do you dare to face your shadows?

About Afra Ernst
Afra Ernst is a choreographer, dancer and maker with roots in both Indonesia and the Netherlands. Her work is personal, but always with a universal undertone: the search for identity, origins and the traces that past and body leave in each other. With Mijn Wayang en Ik she connects dance with memory, physicality with heritage and invites the audience to check their own shadows without fear.
