Vaudeville, variety shows and the magic of circus are the sources of inspiration for Ed Wubbe's successful piece The Great Bean. It takes place in the roaring twenties. The rise of Hollywood, jazz, and dance styles such as tap dance and the Charleston form the backdrop for theatrical dance, circus acrobats, magic acts and a mysterious clown. An exciting world full of glitter and glamor, but also with dark sides and hidden tragedy.
The performance's soundtrack contributes to this atmosphere, with both swinging and sentimental jazz songs from the 1920’s. From the infectious gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt, the mystique of Edward Grieg's Peer Gynt suite, to the experienced and moving voice of Billie Holiday.
