The musical The Color Purple tells the timeless story of three black women living in the American South at the beginning of the 20th century. A time when slavery had been abolished, but the consequences were still strongly felt. Main character Celie leads a life that seems dominated by poverty, abuse and violence. But Celie frees herself by finding her self-worth and standing up for her personal happiness.
The award-winning, world-famous book by Alice Walker was made into a movie by director Steven Spielberg, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey in the lead roles.
In 2005, The Color Purple was reproduced as a musical on Broadway and is now showcasing in the Netherlands for the first time.
