A father and a son. Both with memories. Beautiful images on the surface, but behind them, deeper within the body, further back in the chambers of the memory, are the suppressed images.

Borboletas is about a war. A war that meant something different to a father and son. For the father it is an excuse, the opportunity to leave poverty and his island behind and sail to the West to one day return as a king. For the son, it is something he thinks he recognizes in his father, in his fiery temper or quiet presence.

The solo Borboletas by Gery Mendes, the musician and actor from Cape Verde, arose from conversations with his father: a musical dance that crisscrosses time, past love, the misery of his youth, conscripted fighting for a regime that oppresses his people, and travels along the conscience to the question: was my father a hero or a traitor?
