In a long, alcohol-soaked night, 40-year-old road worker Ralf tries to get his life back on track -- or on the contrary, derail it. He comes from the West but is celebrating carnival in Venlo. For the first time in five years, he is away from home, away from the intensive caregiving he gives his girlfriend Sara's family. What does he learn during that alcohol-soaked night of solidarity, warmth and happy stupidity?
Wandering around in a delicious daze, he looks at his life and how he has lost himself. It's a lonely submersion into an overwhelming party, with a hope to resurface purified.
“Two loose pieces of confetti, with which the wind had free rein. And then still they land in the same glass of beer.”
After two years of restraint and controlling impulses, Afslag Eindhoven presents a performance in the run-up to carnival that exposes a deeper layer: a physical ritual of reflection. Also for people who have 'nothing to do with’ carnival.
Naar de overkant van de nacht is a monologue written by Frans Pollux, based on the novel of the same name by Jan van Mersbergen (awarded the BNG Nieuwe Literatuurprijs 2011).
