8: METAMORPHOSIS received five stars in the Volkskrant and is back in theaters due to its success. Visitors called it a breathtaking experience that makes a deep impression.
Eight men are in form-fitting suits. Like any other day, they walk in step, follow their routine and do exactly what is expected of them. They are caught in the icy rhythm of Henry Purcell's The Cold Song (“let me freeze again”), but the hot breath of change is breathing down their necks. Just like in MC Escher's drawings, we see the transformation take place step by step.
Against the backdrop of global climate change, 8: METAMORPHOSIS is an invitation to rethink existing structures. Is a different way of 'manhood' possible? Does this era herald the end of patriarchy? Are we moving towards a world with humans on the sidelines? Director and choreographer Nicole Beutler slowly, but surely, allows all known patterns to 'melt' until room is created for new perspectives.
“Impressive dance opera about the patriarchal structure that refuses to budge.” ★★★★★
