Lichter dan ik, written by Dido Michielsen, is the gripping story of a young woman who wants to escape Indonesia's class society and choose her own path. When she as a njai (i.e., housekeeper and mistress of a Dutchman) gives birth to a daughter, it turns out that the father does not want to acknowledge their relationship or the daughter. She is then forced to give up her role as a mother in order to offer a better future to her daughter -- a daughter who has the opportunity to acquire more status because of her mixed blood and thus lighter skin color. This involuntary, drastic choice will haunt her for the rest of her life.
Lichter dan ik offers a look from the woman's perspective on the struggles that many Indonesian women fought during colonial rule.
