Je Moeder is an abrasive-humorous musical theater performance by hip-hop collective DIEHELEDING about the recognizable struggle between the mindset of your parents and yourself. A coming-of-age story about finding your identity in a polarized world.

Young Park dreams of becoming a rapper. Two problems: the hip-hop world is dominantly male and his mother is more successful than he is. Park is the son of a radical, feminist musician named Marga.Marga hates men, abhors sex and wanted a child but no partner.

As a spoken word artist, Marga set a long feminist pamphlet to music and subsequently found herself a cult figure. All kinds of radical feminist groups check her as a great example. Through a detour, she still managed to have a child. Park tries to reconcile his radical upbringing with his own manhood, his sexual desires and his desire to be a rapper.

Absurd and hilarious stories from the oeuvre of beloved American writer John Irving serve as inspiration for this rousing adaptation to the theater floor and today's world.

The media about Je Moeder
"'Merel Pauw plays mother Marga with a tormented drive. Already in the first scene she addresses the audience plumply as victims and perpetrators. Dalorim Wartes portrays son Park with a searching, young energy. Steven Ivo plays transgender best friend Roberta as ferociously caring and intensely loyal. He opens with a tragicomic ballad about conception. And the wonderful Julie Mughunda is the love of Park's life, Helen, and a handful more aptly portrayed characters who pass in that life." (Theaterkrant)
"Vibrant performance 'Je moeder' reflects with great humor on feminism, perpetrators and victims." (NRC ★★★★)
"With heavy bass and energetic songs about boarding school boys, insecurity and concerned fathers, the stands regularly turn into a gently swaying club floor, where everyone moves along naturally. The musical power of the company is in full force." (Het Parool)

Part of

"'Je moeder' is a hilarious performance about feminism, gender and extremism, with a blood-serious core."

(Volkskrant ★★★★)
