Director Loek de Bakker (Zilveren Krekel 2025) creates Weirdo (12+) at HNTjong, a musical, humorous and slightly alienating performance about shame, friendship, peer pressure, image and identity formation in adolescents. In the performance, the audience follows several personages in the auditorium of their high school. Not only does the audience hear what the personages say to each other, but also what they think and keep to themselves in the meantime. At a time when belonging seems more important than ever, Weirdo shows how normal it is to feel different.

"Everyone feels like a weirdo sometimes, especially in high school. How should you behave? Who do you want to be and how do you do it? Thoughts that make your head explode, but that you prefer to keep to yourself. By letting all those thoughts, fears and dreams be heard for once, it turns out that we have more in common than we think." (Loek de Bakker)

An auditorium full of discomfort
The auditorium of a high school. The place of seeing and being seen, of cliques, unwritten rules and uncomfortable search for your place in the whole. In a chain of separate events, the audience not only witnesses intense intermission conversations, the relationship crisis of Melanie and Dave, and every false note of the Christmas musical, but also everything that is thought, but not spoken. And among all the fragments of words, fears also creep in, in the form of strange figures who populate the auditorium but are not seen by everyone.Weirdo is a performance for young people aged 12 and up, but emphatically also for adults. With plenty of humor and a touch of magical realism, Weirdo invites you to embrace the outsider in yourself.

The discomfort of being an adolescent
After Supernormal and Only Sweet Boys, Loek de Bakker once again chooses to tell stories of outsiders and questions existing norms in a humorous and poetic way. The makers drew inspiration for Weirdo from, among other things, the atmosphere of the popular young adult film Eighth Grade, the brutal and absurdist magnification of the Netflix series Sex Education and the honesty of the animated film Inside Out. With a great sense of humanity, the creators deliberately seek out the awkwardness of being an adolescent. They touch on themes that are strongly felt by adolescents and their parents, but are not always visible and discussable.

  • Please note: the performance contains bright, flashing lights.

The media about Weirdo
"In Loek de Bakker's surrealistic direction, the fine group of actors excels in recognizable, unruly adolescent behavior." (de Volkskrant)
"It is a recognizable, funny and sometimes moving performance, for young people but certainly also for adults." (Ilovetheater)
