Jam Karet is an honest portrait of a necessarily resilient generation. An interdisciplinary performance about the search for individuality in a world where everything is pigeonholed. Who do you become when you can reinvent yourself?

Dani is admitted to a closed institution because she hears voices. Doctors are unable to diagnose her. During her healing process she discovers that they are not invented figures, but her own suppressed history talking to her. As if this lonely in-between land gives her the space to find again who she can be herself.

Jam Karet (freely translated from Indonesian as 'the time is rubber') is a probing and honest portrait about the search for one's own space in a country where cultures are increasingly clashing. Within assimilated families there is a great taboo on therapy, as "being different" is often under a magnifying glass. The daily uniting of two cultures can get you caught up in continuous adaptation.

In this performance by Matzer, director Melissa Knollenburg exposes how a young generation of bi-cultural Dutch tries to relate to the past. Her personages are searching for connection amid the chaos of a rapidly changing society. Because of her background in dance, the physical - in addition to language - plays a major role in her work. Dance gives space to parts of history that cannot be expressed in language.
