Sadettin Kırmızıyüz's new solo about fathers and sons, descent and future, the Netherlands and alien life. Or rather: about how it feels to be an alien in your own country. FIRST MAN opens up a world that is familiar to some and new to others, but close to everyone. A performance about how to hold on to each other even when the world makes you uncertain.

FIRST MAN takes you into the personal story of Sadettin and his ten-year-old son. The morning after the PVV's election victory in 2023, the phone rings. It is Sadettin's ex-wife. Their son wants to know if his grandparents will be deported from the country. "Do you want to talk to him?" she asks. In the kitchen, Sadettin tries to reassure his son: "We belong here. Even if our name sounds different. No matter what happens, we will stay here." His son falls asleep peacefully that night. But Sadettin himself lies awake. In his dreams, he af if Earth is as dangerous to his child as the planet Krypton is to young Superman.

After years of experiencing discrimination and xenophobia himself, Sadettin fears that his son must now learn to live with it as well. Several languages are spoken in Kırmızıyüz's family and they celebrate Christmas, Ramadan, Easter, Feast of Sacrifice and Saint Nicholas. Still, it feels like they have to prove over and over again that they belong here, just because Sadettin's father once came from elsewhere.

For FIRST MAN , Sadettin collaborates for the first time with director Nicole Beutler. Nicole is a choreographer and theater maker, and has past event a fixture in the Dutch theater landscape for years. From dance and visual theater, she has developed an idiosyncratic and poetic language that stimulates, surprises and seeks out boundaries.
